OpenArena is a free network enabled multiplayer first person shooter based on the ioquake3 fork of the idTech 3 engine (engine of Quake III Arena). Players run around in a arena and use various futuristic weapons to kill each other. Players can either play in 2 teams or everyone on his/her own. It features many game types and sports a varied cast of sadistic characters. Due to violent and occasional racy content it is probably unsuitable for children under the age of 17.

These are the available game modes without teams:

  • Free For All: Kill as many enemies as possible
  • Last Man Standing: A round-based game. Dead players stay dead for the round; kill enemies to be the last survivor
  • Tournament: Players combat each other in 1-on-1 games. The winner stays and losers will go into a queue

These are available game modes for team-based play:

  • Team Deathmatch: Kill as many enemies as possible to help your team to victory
  • Capture the Flag: Each team has a flag. Steal the flag of the enemy team and bring it to your own
  • One Flag CTF: Each team has a flag base and in about the middle of the arena a white flag appears. Bring the white flag to the flag of your enemy to score
  • Harvester: Kill enemies, then collect skulls from a skull dispenser to bring them to the enemy base
  • Overload: Both teams have an obelisk. The goal is to destroy the obelisk of the enemy by shooting it
  • Elimination A round-based game. Dead players stay dead for the round; kill all enemies to be the last surviving team
  • CTF Elimination: Combination of Capture the Flag and Elimination. Your team scores if either all enemies are dead or their flag was captured
  • Domination: A few flags are scattered through the arena, both team have to own the flags by running into them and holding position. Score points by owning flags and keeping them
  • Double Domination: There are two domination points, your team scores if it owns both for 10 seconds

The main focus of OpenArena lies in multiplayer mode, but a singleplayer mode against computer-controlled enemies in 5 different difficulty levels is also possible. The game also features a simple singleplayer deathmatch campaign against bots.
