Red Eclipse

Red Eclipse

Red Eclipse is a Free and Open Source game, using SDL and OpenGL which allows it to be ported to many platforms.

The game is a single-player and multi-player first-person shooter (arena style), built as a total conversion of Cube Engine 2, which lends itself toward a balanced gameplay, completely at the control of map makers, while maintaining a general theme of agility in a large variety of environments (“maps”). The game has also some focus on parcours skills since some special moves like walljumping are possible. Parcours skills are helpful to dodge shots and reach otherwise hard-to-reach places.
The game is played either everyone on his/her own, with 2 teams or with 4 teams.

Red Eclipse allows for a large amount of modification in a relatively easy way, both in terms of gameplay rules and even detailed weapon settings.

Red Eclipse has a few core game modes and many settings to modify the rules (called “mutators”), most of them which can be combined at will. You can play a simple classic free-for-all deathmatch or any wild combination you can up with. Why not playing a vampire capture-the-flag game with 4 teams and rocket launchers only?

These are the core game modes:

  • deathmatch: Kill as many enemies as possible
  • capture-the-flag: Each team has a flag. Steal the flag of the enemy team and bring it to your own
  • defend-and-control: Control points are scattered through the arena, both team have to own them by standing near them and holding position. Score points by owning control points and keeping them
  • bomber-ball: A ball drops in the middle of the arena. Take it and throw it into the enemy's goal to score
  • race: Complete as many laps in a parcours as possible

Note: All game modes can also be played with 2 or 4 teams.

In a true open source by the people for the people nature, it tries to work closely with the gaming and open source communities to provide a better overall experience, taking all sorts of feedback from your average player, to your seasoned developer, aiming to create a story-driven game environment that is flexible, fun, easy to use, and pleasing to the eye.

Some time ago I'd give it a higher score, but now it's got worse. Weapons are really unbalanced, everyone simply runs around with the shotgun (I've been killed with a shotgun from 20m) and other weapons don't stand a chance. Also, the teams are almost never balanced. I know it's community's fault but a lot of matches are boring because of that.
